LAKE SEBU

0 comments Sunday, October 25, 2009

Named as the Summer Capital of South Cotabato, Lake Sebu is home to the T'boli tribe. Sadly however, with the denudatation of the surrounding forests much of the beauty that Lake Sebu was 15 or so years ago when I first visited the place has vanished. Still there is something to offer for someone adventurous enough to venture into its remote areas. Situated almost 3000 feet above sea level, the climate is cool and the air is still fresh. Occassionally, one can still see T'boli women wearing their traditional attire. The traditional weaving of the t'nalak (fabric made of abaca fiber)is still around. But what makes people still go and visit Lake Sebu is the flavor of the fresh tilapia, caught from the lake to the grill, the taste is almost heavenly

How to get there

With the concreting of the road leading up to Lake Sebu, it is now very easy to visit the place. Gone were those days when it took almost four hours over dirt roads and rivers that overflow during the rainy season, now it's less than 30 minutes.

From the capital city of Koronadal, one passes thru the towns of Banga and Surallah. Just a little farther from the poblacion of Surallah is a junction to the left going to the town of T'boli and a little farther is another junction to the left going to Lake Sebu.

Having turned into the paradox of the words that had inspired its name coined from the Maguindanao words ''koron'' or ''kolon'' meaning ''cogon grass,'' and ''nadal'' meaning plain, Koronadal is no longer simply sprawling plains of grass, but a booming city in the heart of Mindanao.

Also popularly called Marbel, a B’laan term which means murky, Koronadal City is situated in the North Western part of South Cotabato. With its 27 barangays and current population of just over 120,000, the business that abound in Koronadal are proud testimonies to the advancement of the city. Among them are several telecommunications companies, mail carriers, freight and handling services firms, a variety of Internet cafĂ©’s and broadcast and media entities.

Many more establishments dot Koronadal, contributing to the wellrounded growth and progress of the city. There are schools and universities, sports and recreation facilities, health services, and complete mix of other businesses. Agriculture remains a rich source of commerce and trade for its people.

Koronadal is also a city that has become a melting pot of different Filipino groups. The predominant are the Ilonggos, intermingling with Cebuanos, Ilocanos, Badjaos, Tagalogs, natives, even Muslims.

And the city has their mayor to thank for helping in the city’s growth and development. In all his years of service, Mayor Fernando Quiarao Miguel, had one core objective in mind: transform Koreradal into a city, and make it the proud center of business and recreation in the region.

Korondal also abounds with tourist attractions. These include the El Gawel Resort and Wildlife Sanctuary, located within a dense forest reservation protected by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the Siok Waterfalls, where water cascades from a height of 70 feet, creating a series of pools for bathing.

Koronadal also has untapped and unexplored wonders such as the Cadidang Cave, nestled in the mountain range of Roxas, and the Acub Spring, which provides water for inland fishing. The Mambucal Spring, on the other hand, provides sulfuric water comfortable for hot bathing.
